INDIA-HEALTH-EAR CLEANER
An Indian traditional 'kaan-saaf-wallah' or ear cleaner, Sunil (R) cleans the ear of a youth at the roadside in Amritsar on February 4, 2015. The cleaners, who use a sliver of bamboo tipped with a wad of glycerine-soaked cotton-wool which they insert into a customers ear, learnt the tricks of the trade from their fathers - the art having being handed down from earlier generations. For a straightforward matter of cleaning out ear wax, the 'kaan-saaf-wallah' receives a fee of INR 20 (45 US cents) per sitting but if a client has an infection, he uses mercurochrome or another ointment for which he charges INR 40 (80 US Cents).
