New Berlin Airport Construction Woes Continue

BERLIN, GERMANY - AUGUST 16: Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit arrivesto give a press conference following a meeting of the Governing Board of the new Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg International Airport on August 16, 2012 in Berlin, Germany. Woes for the management of the airport construction are continuing, most recently with the revelation that a security worker employed at the construction site entrance is an Islamist convert named Florian L. who had contact to Islamic terrorists. Also, the FFB airport association that is in charge of the airport construction is having trouble getting further financial loans as estimated construction costs skyrocket from an orignal EUR 2.5 billion to EUR 5 billion. The airport was originally scheduled to begin operation in June, though the opening is delayed at least until March, 2013, supposedly because installation of the fire security system was far behind schedule. The new aiport is supposed to replace Berlin's current Tegel and Schoenefeld airports, though analysts say that Tegel will have to remain open because the new airport will lack sufficient capacity.
