Genetically-Modified Pigeon Pea

Co-developer of the crop, Dr HC Sharma, an Entomologist at ICRISAT, inspects a controlled plot of the World's first genetically modified Pigeon Pea. The Pigeon pea legume is a source of protein in the tropics and has for the first time in the world been genetically modified to incorporate the insect resistant gene (Bt). Developed at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the transformed plant is resistant to attack by the dreaded bollworm, which according to ICRISAT causes crop loss of about US$ 475 million to India, despite the use of insecticides worth $211 million.
