Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre

DARJEELING, WEST BENGAL, INDIA - 2015/03/28: Different dyes that are used for colouring yarn at Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre. The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre of Darjeeling was started on October 2, 1959 following the escape of His Holiness The Dalai Lama with thousands of Tibetans. The site of the Centre was earlier inhabited by the Thirteenth Dalai Lama during His exile in India between 1910-1912 following a Chinese invasion of Tibet. The main focus of the Refugee Centre is to produce handicrafts like Tibetan carpets, wood, metal and leather items which are sold in India and abroad. The Centre has also trained many persons in various crafts of whom many have set up their own enterprises. Besides, the Centre helps orphans, the aged, the infirm and the needy among the refugees providing them with free housing, food and medical care.
