KONA, HAWAII, UNITED STATES - 2014/01/17: Hula dance was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally migrated there. Hula portrays the words of chant or song as a visual dance. Hula evolved under Western influences in the 19th century and is accompanied by song and Western-influenced musical instruments such as ukelele and guitar. Hula uses many hand motions to represent words in a song or chant. Hand movements signify nature, such as swaying of a tree, or ocean wave.
