Orta di Atella is one of the villages inside the "Terra dei Fuochi" (Land of Fires or Dead Triangle) where the local mafia created hundreds of illegal dumps probably in deals with the industries of northern Italy. The people of the area are fighting against this situation and took part in a demonstration in Naples on November 16 to protest against the illegal dump. Anger is boiling over near Naples after revelations about toxic mafia dumps blamed for rising cancer rates that have prompted accusations the state is ignoring a vast public health crisis.
