Okinawa Governor Off To U.S. For U.S. Bases Talks

CHIBA, JAPAN – MAY 27: Governor of Okinawa Prefecture Takeshi Onaga on Thursday May 27 left for U.S. trips aimed at conveying his opposition against Tokyo's plan to build a new American military base in his prefecture already packed with many U.S. bases. His first leg will be Hawaii where he is slated to exchange views on base affairs with state governor David Ige who has ancestries from Okinawa. Onaga is likely to take up the issue of the recent deadly crash there of a rotor-tilted aircraft, Orspray, belonging to U.S. Marine Corps. Onaga then will fly to Washington where he hopes to have talks with senators, congressmen and senior U.S. government officials to express his concern over the planned construction of an offshore U.S. airstrip off Nago in Okinawa.
