Place Stanislas is a square belonging to a classical urban ensemble, with the triumphal arch Héré (Arc Héré), the Carrière Square (Place de la Carrière) and the Alliance Square (Place d'Alliance) located in Nancy, in the historic region of Lorraine. The square and its urban ensemble are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Wanted by Stanisław Leszczyński (Stanislas in French or Stanislaus I - 1677-1766), King of Poland, father-in-law of Louis XV, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, it was built between 1751 and 1755 under the direction of the architect Emmanuel Héré, to honor his father-in-law Louis XV. The square measures 106 x 124 m. It is surrounded by four pavilions (housing the Opera, The Grand-Hotel de la Reine and the Museum of Fine Arts as well as several restaurants and cafés), the Arc Héré in the north and the Town Hall in the south, the longest building on the square. A bronze statue of Stanislas Leszczyński is located at the center. The square is more than a simple Royal Square, it is at the center of an urban plan bringing together the major institutions of the duchy of the time while uniting, via Place de la Carrière, the Old Town (medieval) and the Ville-Neuve (16th-17th century).
