Indus River in Ladakh between Leh and Lamayuru, Nothern India in an altitude of approx. 3550 m. The Indus is a major south-flowing river in South Asia and with 3,180 km (1,980 mi) one of longest rivers in Asia. The Indus is also strategical important because it comes from India and flows into Pakistan where it provides key water resources for Pakistan's economy. The ultimate source of the Indus is in Tibet; the river begins at the confluence of the Sengge Zangbo and Gar Tsangpo rivers that drain the Nganglong Kangri and Gangdise Shan (Gang Rinpoche, Mt. Kailas) mountain ranges. The Indus then flows northwest through Ladakh and Baltistan into Gilgit, just south of the Karakoram range.
