Macrophages originate from monocytes, a type of white blood cell. Their job is to destroy by phagocytosis foreign matter (bacteria, virus) and dead and dying cells within the body. Macrophages play an important role in stimulating additional immune response by presenting antigens that identify foreign material for attack by other cells.
