Under an accord with the Palestinian Authority in 1997, Israel withdrew from most of Hebron but kept troops around several enclaves in the city centre where 600 hardline Jewish settlers live under heavy army protection. The Middle East today marked the 40th anniversary of the outbreak of the Six Day War in which Israel defeated three Arab armies and began four decades of occupation that reshaped the Middle East and galvanized Palestinian resistance.
