That movie and "Wuthering Heights," also released in 1939, were her first Hollywood efforts. At the time, a reviewer for the New York Times praised Miss Fitzgerald for her "sentient and touching" portrayal of a character in "Dark Victory." Now critics and audiences are praising her for her nightclub act in which she sings what she calls "street songs," the "songs I used to sing as a young girl in the streets of Dublin and in the Irish countryside."
