Proposed U.S./Mexico "Friendship Park" To Become No-man's Land

SAN YSIDRO, CA - FEBRUARY 1: New border fences zig-zag next to the original straight U.S./Mexico border fence that divides the U.S. (L) from Tijuana, Mexico (R) a few miles east of Border State Park February 1, 2003 west of San Ysidro, California. It was originally hoped that the park would become a bi-national peace and friendship park. The U.S. government is now planning to replace the single fence with three parallel fences in a 200-foot swath paralleling the border, turning the small seaside park into a "no-man's land". The state park is closed over concern by rangers of unsafe runoff water flowing from Mexico. Residents of Playas de Tijuana, Mexico worry that the project's 200-ft. to 900-ft. wide pyramid berm to fill in a canyon, will drive sewage runoff back and flood the community of 25,000.
