Annual Bonfire Season Begins On England's South Coast

BURGESS HILL, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 25: Revellers stand near the fires during the first of the Bonfire Night celebrations on September 25, 2004 in Burgess Hill, England. Bonfire Night is related to the ancient festival of Samhain, the Celtic New Year otherwise known as Halloween. There are a series of processions held in the South of England which culminate in Lewes on November 5. Bonfire Night celebrations are peculiar to the British Isles due to the burning of an effigy or "guy", usually made by children and representing Guy Fawkes who in 1605 unsuccessfully attempted to commit the infamous act of terror of blowing-up the Houses of Parliament.
