BRITAIN-WAR-REMEMBRANCE

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Torch of Commemoration is passed along a line, including Claire Horton, Director General of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (L), Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (2L) Royal Navy D-Day Veteran Peter Kent, who served on HMS Adventure during the Normandy Landings and Minister of Veterans' Affairs Johnny Mercer during a ceremony at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, London on May 14, 2024. Marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the torch was lit and passed down a line to create a symbolic and visual representation of the message of D-Day being passed through the generations. The CWGC torch will travel to capital cities and key cemetery and memorial sites around the UK, including Edinburgh, Manchester and Portsmouth, before travelling to Normandy across the Channel with D-Day veterans. It will be the centrepiece of the CWGC's lighting of more than 25,000 Commonwealth war graves this summer symbolising the human cost of the fight for liberty and will form a key part of a vigil at the CWGC's Bayeux War Cemetery on the evening of 5 June.
