PANMUNJEOM, SOUTH KOREA - NOVEMBER 3: (FILE PHOTO) This image from an IKONOS satellite shows a November 3, 2000 aerial view of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) including the Panmunjeom area and Truce Village (L). Panmunjeom is located approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Seoul on the Tongil-ro Highway. Panmunjeom is where the July 27, 1953 armistice negotiations took place that ended the Korean War. Technically, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) are observing an extended cease-fire treaty. A 155-mile Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was created after signing the armistice agreement and both parties retreated back two km (one mile). Panmunjeom has been the area where the north and south meet to discuss military, economic, and political problems.
