Over 300,000 refugees have fled severe drought, conflict and famine in southern Somalia this year into Ethiopia and Kenya, according to the United Nations. Now, a surge in fighting between the Al-Qaeda linked Shebab rebels and government forces backed by African Union troops and Kenyan soldiers is forcing thousands more to flee. This month, the UN said it requires $1.5 billion to address the crisis next year, just one month after the Shebab expelled 16 aid agencies operating in the areas they control.
