Qutb Minar, or Qutub Minar, at 74 meters, is the second tallest minar in India measuring 100 meters in height and along with the ancient and medieval monuments surrounding it, form the Qutb Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mehrauli, Delhi. Qutbu l-Din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, started construction of the bottom storey of Qutb Minar in 1199 CE, later in 1220 Aibak's successor, and son-in-law Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, added three storeys on top of Aibak's first, then in 1369, lightning struck the top storey, destroying it completely/ Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the 19th emperor of Delhi (1351-1388) carried out restoration work and replaced the damaged storey with two new storeys, made of both red sandstone and white marble.
