Highly Contagious Bird Flu Strain Detected at Niigata,Aomori Farms
NIIGATA, Japan, - Nov. 29: The prefectural governments of Niigata and Aomori began culling a total of about 330,000 chickens and ducks Tuesday after the H5 strain of bird flu virus was detected at local farms.
Tests have confirmed the presence of a highly contagious strain of
virus at the poultry farm in the village of Sekikawa in Niigata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, while the Aomori government is trying to confirm whether the virus at a local duck farm is also the contagious type.
Both the Niigata and Aomori prefectural governments have restricted
the movement of poultry and eggs in an area within 3 kilometers of the
farms in question. The Niigata government requested the deployment of
the Self-Defense Forces to assist with the culling operation.
