The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or Blue Mosque, in Istanbul was built between 1609 and 1616 by Sultan Ahmed I and designed by architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa. Famous for its large central dome, six minarets, and spacious courtyard, the mosque’s interior features over 20,000 blue İznik tiles and intricate calligraphy. Capable of holding up to 10,000 worshippers, it combines Byzantine and Ottoman architectural influences and remains both an active place of worship and one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks.
