Mother Reunited With Infant Son After Giving Birth In Covid-19 Ward

ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MAY 05: A doctor talks with Ebru Celik and husband Olgun Celik before she is discharged and would meet her newborn son for the first time after thirty three days recovering from COVID-19 at the Acibadem Altunizade Hospital on May 05, 2020 in Istanbul, Turkey. At eight months pregnant Ebru tested positive for COVID-19 on April 3 and was admitted directly to the dedicated COVID-19 ICU ward at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital. Her condition became serious and while intubated she gave birth through emergency C-section. Burak Celik was born nearly one month premature but was healthy and tested negative for COVID-19. After the birth Ebru spent the next seventeen days in the ICU, after a further COVID-19 test returned a negative result, she was moved to the COVID-19 in-patient ward. After a 33-day battle against the virus, doctors discharged her and allowed her to go home. The day she left the hospital was the first time she and her husband had been allowed to see and hold their new baby and to take him home to be introduced to their family and to his two-year-old brother Berk. As of May 5, Turkey has recorded 3,520 Coronavirus related deaths, 129,491 confirmed cases and 73,285 recovered patients. As numbers begin to drop Turkey has announced a tentative loosening of some restrictions but will continue weekend lockdowns. The interior ministry continues restrictions on travel between 24 cities, a curfew is still in place for people over the age of 65 and under 20, schools, cafes, bars and non-essential businesses remain closed.
